Advice to Mothers

Everyday I wonder whether I am teaching enough to my child. Especially whether I am teaching him enough about God.

It is Sunday, and I spend a lot of time at church on Sunday, so my Sunday posts tend to be more religion oriented, so you can skip it if you want.

But how do you teach a young child about God?

We try simply be reading the Bible to him, going to  church, and having him with us when we do family prayer. That’s about all I can do now. He’s not old enough to be able to really be thankful for anything. He’s too young to understand that concept. But if we read to him, and sometimes tell him stories about God - maybe it will take when he is older. If we take him to church with us now, maybe when he is older he will have good memories of church. If we teach him that mom and dad pray, maybe one day he will pray too.

What else can you do?

When kids are 3 years old in our church, they start going to Sunday School, insted of being with their parents. They are so young, but they learn to be thankful to God for things- basic things - like fish, plants, air, mom and dad, family, sounds, wind, rain etc. That’s what they learn early. Later they get more involved. But early on, we stick to the basics.

Also, there are a lot of church songs out there. Some of them even have great hand motions to go with them. I sing some of these to my son every day. He loves the ones with hand motions. He thinks that I am there, putting on a one-woman show for him. He watches me, listens to me, tries to copy me, and learns. Hopefully he is learning (otherwise I am making quite a fool out of myself for nothing).

But these are all simple things. And I think it is the simple things that will teach our children about God and what is right and wrong. All of these concepts are important. And they all need to be taught by the parents. Teachers at school won’t do it, and day care won’t do it. So parents have to step up and teach these concepts to their children as best they can. Remember, that as parents, our best is all we can do. Whether it takes or not is a matter for your child to discuss with God.
