Advice to Mothers

There are many activities that are actually done as a family on Christmas Day or Christmas Eve. Families go to church, open presents, eat together, watch movies and play games.

But there are many activities that can be done throughout the season that can bring a family closer together, start traditions, and provide memories for later years.

I have started to compile a list of them here - and feel free to add your own to the list. Some of them cost money, and some of them don’t. But they are all in the spirit of Christmas.

• decorate cookies
• take the decorated cookies to a senior home and hand them out
• make candies
• take the candies to a women’s shelter and hand them out
• go chop down the tree at a farm - together
• Do Christmas crafts (visit your local craft store if you lack ideas)
• spend each night watching a Christmas movie instead of TV
• Make paper chains to put up around the house
• Read a Christmas-related story every night
• Make wreaths, garlands or some other homemade Christmas decoration
• Go caroling
• Sing Christmas songs at home
• Go to The Nutcracker
• Go to a Chritmas music recital
• Take a walk through the neighborhood to look at the lights and decorations of other people
• Help out at a soup kitchen
• Go decorate mom or dad’s office
• Help you teacher decorate the classroom
• Throw a party
• Wrap presents
• Make snowmen
• Play board games as a family
• Sit around a fire and talk
• Have dinner together
• Buy a family ornament
• Scrapbook
• Go to a story-time at the local library
• Write a Christmas-related story to make into a book to read next year
• Make a Santa costume
• Participate in a Christmas play
• Go to a Christmas carol sing-along
• Go to a Christmas play
• Help decorate the local zoo or amusement park for Christmas
